Homocysteine

Homocysteine, as we all know, is a key Cardiac Inflammatory marker — and understanding how its levels are controlled is crucial.

In the body, homocysteine is continuously converted to methionine and back again. This conversion happens through two tightly connected pathways :

1) The B12–Folate (B9) Pathway

2) The Choline–Betaine Pathway

For this entire cycle to run efficiently, the body needs Vitamin B6, B9 (Folate), B12, and Choline. Deficiency in any of these slows the conversion, causing homocysteine to accumulate, which increases cardiac risk.

When one of the two pathways slows down, the other steps in to keep the cycle running for example, when folate is deficient, the body relies more on choline-derived betaine to keep homocysteine levels in check and vice-versa.

But here’s the catch ↓

When folate or B12 is low, the body diverts extra choline to rescue the homocysteine cycle. The more choline gets pulled away, more its other vital roles start suffering like :

Lipid metabolism, Brain function, Liver function, Cell integrity & cell membrane structure.

When these roles are compromised, there’s increased risk of -

NAFLD (fatty liver), Poor lipid levels, Premature aging, Cognitive decline, And more metabolic imbalances.

👉 So while supplementing with Vitamins B6, B9, and B12, don’t forget Choline.

It’s the missing piece that ensures your homocysteine cycle and your metabolic health functions at its best.

Foods rich in Choline include Beef liver, Hard boiled eggs, Chicken breast, Soya, Wheat germ, Kidney beans.

RDA for Choline – 250-400mg for children between 4-18yrs, 425mg for females and 550mg for males
